@Kevin,

 Yep, I know it is ZX81, and although technically it is not Spectrum, in former USSR it was :)
 Thanks for the book reference, I'll take a look.

Not wanting to nitpick as it's always nice to read about how people got involved in computers but are you aware that it's a ZX81 keyboard you have pictured above, not a Spectrum one?

I think you hit the nail on the head at the beginning of your article when you say that the homemade clones turned out to be very cheap. This is Sinclair's legacy - If nothing else, he and the people that created the ZX range of computers proved that it was possible to design a useful computer that was adaptable and relatively easy to build with cheap components. You should have a look at Chris Smith's "The ZX Spectrum ULA: How to design a microcomputer" book for an fascinating delve into the design of the ULA and all the tricks they used to push it to the limits, I think you'd enjoy reading it.

Did you know, there's now a spectrum emulator for android phones? Loading a game plays the tape loading sounds and the screen flashes as it loads. That brought back many happy memories of my spectrum.

What a great article! Speccy BASIC - I can handle and understand
Speccy Assember? Forget it!

Your setup is brilliant too.
For me, I stick to emulation when playing Spectrum Games

@Mr. Shortcut,

 Great to hear from a person who not only "shares the moment", but also can gladly express his true feelings. Rare, but awesome, breed of humans! :)

Thank you for your sincere comment!

Wow! 1974, high school, no such thing as mouse or monitors, and programming began with a program called Star Trek. In all these years since Pong and such, I've never found a game that brought me as much pleasure as I clearly perceive you also experienced with each step forward, because it was so much more than a game; it was the discovery of new frontiers.

Thank you so much, for bringing those days to the forefront... and for making me feel like an old pro, even though I'm still young. Your descriptions of each step are so well-articulated that you make us feel we were right there with you, although we were doing our own thing thousands of miles away.

If the final photo is actually the same one you built way back when, STANDING OVATION for your preservation. I can't even count how many computers I've been through over the decades. I don't even have my TRS-80 Or the "state-of-the-art" hahahahaha... IBM with the 40mb hard drive that were my first babies.

I would think that most people reading past your first paragraph feel a wave of nostalgia. Great post. Thank you for sharing, in the truest sense.
